It was possible to use such cards only in sales or services rendering firms who issued them. Diner’s Club Inc. issued the first universal credit card in 1950 to its members. The second such card was launched by Express Company in 1958.

Later on credit cards banking systems appeared. The first banking system of national interest was BankAmericard, which was started by Bank of America from California in 1959. At the beginning of 1966 that system was licensed in other countries and from 1977 it was named VISA. By end of seventies of the last Century, credit cards were mainly used in states of North America and then spread throughout the world.

Debit cards are more recent and mostly used in Great Britain.
